What is Big Data?
The term “Big Data” arose as an acknowledgement that many types of data do not fit nicely into traditional relational structures, and that in some cases the volume of data being generated by some systems can quickly overwhelm the largest Relational Database Management Systems. In the healthcare field, genomics data, images, videos, and time-series information do not fit into the normal “columns and rows” format of traditional systems.

By themselves, these numbers don’t seem that large, but multiplied by millions of tests a year, a substantial amount of data are generated by the medical community. 

Huneo’s goal is to drastically expand the collection human data while keeping all of it online and available for use by individuals and their healthcare providers. The HuNet system was designed to capture, manage, and deliver health data collected from millions of people.

At Huneo, we specialize in a particular type of Big Data: Time-Series information. Time-Series data, also known as waveform data, typically have the properties that 1) they are generated in real-time, and 2) each value is related to a previous value by signal ID and by time. 

While most people are very familiar with “vital signs” being displayed on a monitor in an ICU, they typically don’t know that once that data leaves that monitor, they are usually not stored. Lost forever is the opportunity to compare those signals versus similar signals for that patient at some earlier or later time. In less critical settings than the ICU, there is almost no chance that human biophysical data are ever even captured, let alone used to compare changes to people’s health over time.
